Lumber Estimator

Sticks

254

Bundles

2

Cost

$1041

Reference band: $3.90–8.90/stick (2×4, 8–16 ft) · waste already included in the printed quantity

How the count is built

  1. 1Measure every wall run and add the plate runs (bottom + double top = 3× the wall length).
  2. 2Divide by spacing: 16″ O.C. uses 0.75 studs per foot; add 10% for corners and openings.
  3. 3Convert to bundles: 8-ft 2×4 ships 208 per bundle, 2×6 ships 156.

💡 Aisle tip: big-box lumber and pavers are stock-replenished, but 16-ft framing sticks, 18-ft paver borders, and non-stock shingle colors sell out by late spring — order the delivery for the long members even when the cart says "in stock."

🧱

Pavers Estimator

Pavers 16×16

90

Base tons

5

Cost

$634

Reference band: $2.20–6.50/sq ft material · waste already included in the printed quantity

How the count is built

  1. 1Measure length × width of the finished patio, including curved borders as rectangles.
  2. 2Divide area by one paver's face coverage — a 16×16 in paver covers 1.78 sq ft.
  3. 3Add 10% for straight-lay cuts, 15% for herringbone or running bond.

💡 Aisle tip: big-box lumber and pavers are stock-replenished, but 16-ft framing sticks, 18-ft paver borders, and non-stock shingle colors sell out by late spring — order the delivery for the long members even when the cart says "in stock."

27

Pickets

437

Cost

$2,400

Reference band: $9–32/linear ft material · waste already included in the printed quantity

How the count is built

  1. 1Walk the property line and subtract gates; corner posts add at every direction change.
  2. 2Divide by panel width — 6-ft pressure-treated privacy panels ship 8 ft wide.
  3. 3Posts go one per panel end plus one per gate: count = panels + 1 + corners.

💡 Aisle tip: big-box lumber and pavers are stock-replenished, but 16-ft framing sticks, 18-ft paver borders, and non-stock shingle colors sell out by late spring — order the delivery for the long members even when the cart says "in stock."

⬜

Tile Estimator

Tiles 12×12

221

Boxes

19

Cost

$780

Reference band: $1.80–8.00/sq ft per tile · waste already included in the printed quantity

How the count is built

  1. 1Measure each field separately; deduct nothing for fixtures under a vanity or tub.
  2. 2Tiles per sq ft = 144 ÷ (face length × face width in inches).
  3. 3Add 10% straight-lay, 15% diagonal, 20% for pattern-matched stone.

💡 Aisle tip: big-box lumber and pavers are stock-replenished, but 16-ft framing sticks, 18-ft paver borders, and non-stock shingle colors sell out by late spring — order the delivery for the long members even when the cart says "in stock."

🪟

Deck Estimator

Joists 16″ OC

14

Deck boards

49

Cost

$2,256

Reference band: $4.20–11.00/sq ft framing + boards · waste already included in the printed quantity

How the count is built

  1. 1Joists at 16″ O.C. for composite, 24″ for 5/4 wood boards across joists.
  2. 2Decking boards: area ÷ (board width − 1/4″ gap) ÷ board length, +8% waste.
  3. 3Hardware: one 3/8″ through-bolt per joist-beam crossing, one hanger per joist end.

💡 Aisle tip: big-box lumber and pavers are stock-replenished, but 16-ft framing sticks, 18-ft paver borders, and non-stock shingle colors sell out by late spring — order the delivery for the long members even when the cart says "in stock."

2,240

Bundles

69

Cost

$2,622

23 squares · 3 bundles per square

Reference band: $34–42/bundle architectural · waste already included in the printed quantity

How the count is built

  1. 1Measure the footprint, not the slope, then apply the pitch factor: 6/12 = 1.12×, 8/12 = 1.20×.
  2. 23 bundles = 1 square (100 sq ft); order by the square plus 1 bundle ridge cap per 35 ft of ridge.
  3. 3Starter strip and underlayment run one roll per 4 squares.

💡 Aisle tip: big-box lumber and pavers are stock-replenished, but 16-ft framing sticks, 18-ft paver borders, and non-stock shingle colors sell out by late spring — order the delivery for the long members even when the cart says "in stock."

19

Underlayment sf

449

Cost

$1,240

Reference band: $1.90–5.60/sq ft laminate & LVP · waste already included in the printed quantity

How the count is built

  1. 1Measure each room; closets count, stair treads are measured as treads not area.
  2. 2Boxes per room = area × waste ÷ box coverage (most LVP boxes cover 23.8 sq ft).
  3. 3Add 10% glue-down, 12% click-lock, 15% if the room has more than 4 corners.

💡 Aisle tip: big-box lumber and pavers are stock-replenished, but 16-ft framing sticks, 18-ft paver borders, and non-stock shingle colors sell out by late spring — order the delivery for the long members even when the cart says "in stock."

Lowe's vs Home Depot Estimating Notes (Category Level)

The Lowe's estimator toolset mirrors the Home Depot departments — same lumber, paver, fence, tile, deck, shingle, and flooring calculators in their respective categories — and for planning purposes the two produce equivalent quantities. Commodity lumber, OSB, and shingles price within 2–4% between the chains in most weeks; where they genuinely diverge is stock depth (Lowe's carries different sheet-goods inventory in some regions), delivery minimums, and the returns window on unopened boxes. The correct 2026 method: run the counts here once, then price your four biggest lines at whichever store is closer and accept a ±5% band against the other — chasing a $0.20 stick-price gap across town costs more in fuel and time than it saves.

✅ Buy at the big box

Commodity lumber, sheet goods, fasteners, pavers, LVP — replenished stock, predictable pricing, easy re-orders for one or two missed items.

⚠️ Price-check both

Shingles by the square, fencing panels, tile by the box — promo cycles move these lines 8–15% week to week.

❌ Go to the yard instead

LVL and engineered beams, 20-ft+ sticks, framing packages over $15k — yards deliver what the box special-orders in two weeks.

Big-Box Material Calculator FAQ

Does Home Depot have a material calculator?▼

Home Depot's website hosts separate project calculators inside each product department — a lumber calculator, a paver calculator, a fencing estimator, a tile calculator, a deck load calculator, a roofing shingle estimator, and flooring room calculators — but they live in seven different corners of the site and each requires you to already know that department's units. This page consolidates the same math into one set of cards with consistent inputs (one dimension per line, one waste rule per trade) and stores the quantities the big-box calculators skip, like bundle counts, post counts, and box coverage. Your actual order still goes through the store or homedepot.com; these calculators produce the number you bring to the aisle.

How accurate is the Home Depot lumber calculator?▼

The in-store lumber calculator is accurate for straight walls and floors but carries two blind spots this page corrects. First, it counts studs only — plate runs (which triple a wall's linear footage) and opening framing (kings, jacks, cripples at 4–6 sticks per opening) are separate lines you must add. Second, it outputs raw pieces when yards sell bundles: your 312-stud order is one 208-piece bundle plus a break-pack, not a decimal. For whole-project lumber totals, the building material estimator chains every system; for single-size deep dives, the dedicated 2×4 and 2×6 calculators carry the span tables the store tool never shows.

How many pavers do I need for a 12x12 patio?▼

A 12×12 patio is 144 sq ft. With 16×16 inch pavers (1.78 sq ft each) that is 81 pavers, plus 10% for cuts and breakage = 90 pavers. With 12×12 inch pavers (1 sq ft each) it is 144 + 10% = 158. With 4×8 inch brick pavers (0.22 sq ft) it is about 655 + 15% for the running bond pattern = 753. The pattern choice moves the number more than the paver choice: herringbone generates 20–30% cut waste versus 10% for straight lay. Order one full pallet layer beyond the calculator when your project needs color-matching across batches — paver dye lots vary visibly, and a later pallet will not match.

How much does a 200 linear foot fence cost in materials?▼

A 200-linear-foot 6-foot privacy fence runs $1,800–6,400 in materials depending on grade: pressure-treated pickets with 4×4 posts land near $9–12/linear ft ($1,800–2,400), cedar boards with steel posts run $16–22/linear ft ($3,200–4,400), and vinyl panels reach $28–32/linear ft ($5,600–6,400). The count math: 25 eight-foot panels, 26 posts plus corners, 3 rails per section (200 pickets at 5.5-inch face), and roughly 4 bags of concrete per post — 104 bags, which is the line most first-time fence estimators miss entirely. Gate hardware adds $120–260 per opening.

How many bundles of shingles do I need for a 2000 sq ft roof?▼

Start from the footprint, not the roof: a 2,000 sq ft footprint at 6/12 pitch is 2,240 sq ft of roof plane (footprint × 1.12), which is 22.4 squares, or 68 bundles of architectural shingles (3 bundles per square). Add one ridge-cap bundle per 35 feet of ridge (typically 3–4 bundles on a 2,000 sq ft home), one underlayment roll per 4 squares (6 rolls), and 15–20% extra if the roof has valleys and dormers where cut shingles pile up. The practical order is 72–75 bundles including ridge and waste — and because shingles are delivered by the pallet (usually 42–56 bundles), plan the drop location before the truck arrives.

Should I use Home Depot or Lowe's prices for estimating?▼

For a 2026 planning estimate, treat the two as interchangeable at the category level and let service decide. Both chains price commodity lumber within 2–4% of each other most weeks, both honor each other's promotional cycles unpredictably, and both mark up specialty items differently — so the honest method is to price the four biggest lines (lumber, sheathing, shingles, flooring) at whichever store is 15 minutes closer and accept a ±5% variance against the other. What actually differs is the returns experience on leftover material and the contractor desk's re-order speed, and both of those matter more to a finished budget than a $0.20 stick-price gap. This page's price bands are category references, not store quotes.

Putting It Together

Each card on this page is the store calculator with the two lines added that make an order real: waste, and the unit the counter actually sells (bundles, boxes, pallets, squares). Bring the printed quantities to the aisle, keep the "buy at / price-check / go to the yard" triage in your pocket, and the trip produces a complete order instead of a second trip. Framing-specific depth lives in the dedicated tools: the lumber calculator for bundle math, the deck framing calculator for joist and beam sizing, and the 2026 framing lumber price list for the stick-by-stick pricing behind these bands.
