Siding Calculator — Vinyl, Fiber Cement, Wood Lap
Squares, boxes, and every trim run — J-channel, starter strip, F-trim, corner posts — with 2026 big-box-led reference pricing for material and labor. One square = 100 sq ft, waste 10%, openings deducted automatically.
1355 sq ft gross wall (1224 walls + 131 gables) − 152 sq ft openings = 1203 net. Reference pricing modeled on 2026 big-box in-store ranges for vinyl — shelf prices move weekly, so treat the band, not the midpoint, as the benchmark.
Four Materials, Four Different Bills — Measured, Not Marketing
The same 28-square house prices from $8,900 in vinyl to $28,600 in cedar installed. Filter by what you are optimizing for — the cards carry each material's real trade-offs, including the one that degrades in wet climates.

Trim Math: J-Channel, Starter Strip, F-Trim & Corner Posts
Field siding gets all the attention, but trim is 20–30% of the material bill and the entire reason a re-side looks finished. The calculator above computes every run; here is the method behind each number so you can adapt it to odd layouts.
| Trim Piece | Formula | Default House | Why It Exists |
|---|---|---|---|
| J-channel | Σ opening perimeters × 1.10 (14 lf/window, 20 lf/door) | 168 lf | Receives field panels at every opening; also trims inside corners on board-and-batten |
| Starter strip | Wall perimeter × 1.05 | 143 lf | Locks the first course level and holds the drip angle at the wall base |
| F-trim | Wall perimeter × 1.05 (soffit line) | 143 lf | Closes the siding-to-soffit transition at the eaves |
| Corner posts | 4 corners × ceil(wall height ÷ 10 ft) | 4 pieces | Outside corners; 12-ft posts avoid a splice on most single-story walls |
💡 Tip — Order trim by the stick, not by estimate
J-channel and starter strip ship in 10-ft and 12-ft-6 sticks. Convert your linear feet to pieces at the stick length and round up per piece — 152 lf of J-channel is 13 pieces at 12'6", not "152 lf" on a purchase order. Crews that order raw linear feet are the ones splicing three leftovers across one window.
⚠️ Warning — The soffit-and-fascia scope gap
This calculator prices wall siding only. If your soffits or fascia are replacement-grade too, add 8–15% to the material line: soffit panels cover 3.33 sq ft each and fascia runs the full perimeter plus rakes. Re-side bids that "include soffit" without itemizing it are pricing a scope this page deliberately excludes.
Squares to Boxes: The Conversion Every Estimate Uses
The universal siding unit. Every coverage chart, bid, and bundle count is denominated in squares.
Vinyl boxes cover 100–120 sq ft depending on profile — always confirm the printed coverage on the box you are actually buying.
Field waste from starter-course offsets, opening cutouts, and gable angles. Gable-heavy roofs justify 12–15%.
⚠️ Reference-price disclaimer: dollar bands on this page are modeled on 2026 big-box in-store product ranges and national installation labor, published for calibration — not as a quote and not tied to any single retailer's daily price. Confirm current shelf pricing at your store before ordering, and get two installed bids for anything beyond a DIY refresh.
Where Siding Takeoffs Go Wrong
❌ Don't — Multiply floor area by a siding factor
"2,000 sq ft house ≈ 20 squares" fails in both directions: a compact two-story with the same living area can need 26 squares while a single-story ranch on a wide footprint needs 35+. Siding covers perimeter × height, not floor area — measure the footprint (length × width) like the calculator above, every time.
💡 Tip — Stage one full extra box/bundle for dye-lot and damage
Vinyl and engineered wood are batch-dyed; a box ordered two weeks later can sit visibly off-color next to the original wall. Keep one unopened box per job — it is the returnable insurance policy against both dye-lot drift and the cracked panel that happens during install.
⚠️ Warning — Wood lap's hidden repaint clock
Cedar lap carries the highest installed band on this page and a 5–8 year repaint cycle in wet climates — a $4,000–$6,000 recurring line over a 25-year hold that the sticker price never shows. In marine or high-rainfall exposure, that clock shortens further; fiber cement or engineered wood exists precisely to break this cycle.
Siding Calculator FAQ
How does a siding calculator work?▾
A siding calculator converts wall geometry into squares and trim runs: gross wall area (perimeter × height, plus gable triangles for 4/12 roofs), minus 14 sq ft per window and 20 sq ft per door, times a 10% waste factor, divided by 100 to get squares. Trim is measured in linear feet — J-channel around every opening's perimeter, starter strip along the bottom, and F-trim where siding meets soffits. One square always equals 100 square feet of covered wall, which is the unit every manufacturer's coverage chart and every contractor's bid uses.
How many squares of siding does a 2,000 sq ft house need?▾
A typical 2,000 sq ft two-story house (about 46 × 26 ft footprint, 18–19 ft of stacked wall height, 8 windows, 2 doors) needs 26–31 squares of siding — roughly 2,700 net square feet of wall after openings, plus 10% waste. The living-area number is not the siding number: siding scales with perimeter and height, so a sprawling single-story 2,000 sq ft ranch can need 35+ squares while a compact two-story needs 26. Run your actual footprint above rather than multiplying floor area.
How many boxes of vinyl siding do I need for my house?▾
Vinyl siding is boxed at about one square (100 sq ft of coverage) per box, so boxes ≈ squares after the 10% waste factor: a 28-square house takes 28 boxes. Always confirm the coverage printed on the specific box — double 4″ and dutch-lap profiles cover 100–120 sq ft per box depending on the manufacturer, and ordering against the printed coverage instead of a generic 1:1 rule is how installers end up 2–3 boxes short at 5 pm on sheathing day.
How much J-channel do I need per window and door?▾
Budget 14 linear feet of J-channel per standard 3×4 window and 20 linear feet per 3-foot door, then add 10% for splices and mitered corners — the calculator above does exactly this. A house with 8 windows and 2 doors consumes 152 linear feet of J-channel, which at typical 12-ft-6 stick lengths is 13–14 pieces. Underspecifying J-channel is the most common trim error in DIY siding orders because it is invisible until the openings are actually trimmed.
What does siding cost per square in 2026?▾
Installed siding runs $295–$510 per square for vinyl, $570–$870 for fiber cement, $680–$1,020 for cedar lap, and $460–$720 for engineered wood at 2026 big-box-led reference pricing (material plus labor). Material-only, halve those figures. Vinyl earns the value benchmark: it installs in roughly half the labor hours of fiber cement, which is why its labor band starts at $200 per square while fiber cement starts at $350.
Should I deduct windows and doors from siding area?▾
Yes — deduct 14 sq ft per standard window and 20 sq ft per door, as this calculator does. But keep the waste factor at 10% instead of dropping it: the cutoffs around every opening produce offcuts that rarely fit the next wall, and trim consumes its own offcuts too. Deducting openings and keeping full waste lands within one square of a professional takeoff on typical houses; skipping the deduction overshoots by 2–3 squares, and skipping waste undershoots by the same margin.
Is fiber cement worth the premium over vinyl?▾
The math favors fiber cement when you plan to stay 15+ years: it costs roughly $280 more per square installed (a $5,600 premium on 20 squares) but holds a paint finish 15–25 years versus vinyl's fade-and-crack cycle, and it resists hail and wind-blown debris that embrittles vinyl. For a 5–10 year horizon, or a rental where refresh cost dominates, vinyl's $295–$510 per square installed wins on total spend. Engineered wood splits the difference at roughly 60% of cedar's cost with a wood-look finish.
Does this siding calculator match the Home Depot estimator?▾
This page uses the same units big-box stores quote in — squares, boxes, and linear feet of trim — with reference price bands modeled on 2026 in-store product ranges rather than a single day's web price. Store prices move weekly and vary by region and profile, so treat every dollar figure here as a calibration band: if a local quote or shelf price sits more than 20% outside the band shown for your material, something differs — profile, insulation backing, or scope — and it's worth asking which.
Re-framing the walls under that siding?
The wall framing calculator counts studs, kings, jacks, and sheathing for any wall with openings — the structural half of a re-side project.
